Hydrophobic coating - Rainworks

Concrete can, according to Rainworks, become mischievous.  What happens if you mix a super-hydrophobic coating that repels water and keeps surfaces dry, with the natural colour transformation of a wet concrete? Simple – an opportunity to creates hidden messages and designs that only appear on rainy days.

By spraying Rainworks’s super-hydrophobic coating through a stencil onto concrete, areas that repel water are created. The next time the surface gets wet, everything darkens except for where it has been sprayed, and the contrast between light (dry) concrete and dark (wet) concrete creates the image. Whenever it's dry, the rainwork will be completely invisible. The surface it is sprayed on retains the same texture even after it is coated. Rainworks can be made on any surface that darkens when wet, including concrete, wood, stone, and some fabrics. Once dry, Rainworks is completely non-toxic, environmentally safe, and biodegradable. The solvent in the coating should not be poured down the drain, but when used as instructed, it evaporates and does not enter the water system. On average, a rainwork lasts 2 to 4 months. The longevity of a print depends on the type of concrete, amount of foot traffic, and cleanliness of the surface during installation. Rainworks are legal on public sidewalks, as long as they are not used to advertise anything, because they are temporary, and don’t harm the property. The Official Rainworks Map now has over 100 projects, from dozens of contributors, spanning over 4 continents. Anybody who makes a rainwork can add its location to the map.

Rainworks gives people a reason to look forward to rainy days, but it also creates an interactive engagement with the environment and the community. Nearly every day, people are sharing photos of new rainworks they've made with the official hashtag: #Rainworks
