materials newsletter / july 09 |
We love materials.
SCIN takes great pleasure in this month’s eclectic material offering. The spirit is definitely fiesta with materials both exhuberant, thought provoking, utterly beguiling and more traditional. This material showground may not have a bearded lady (and nor do we in the offices) but it does have blue grass and coatings inspired from white beetles. So sit back and feel the wind in your ears as you scream on this imaginary ride and consider what you can do with a few of these material treats.
When we come back in September, SCIN is changing and we shall be offering a new monthly membership (£12.95) to give you the opportunity to create your tailored virtual and physical material collection to help save time, inspire and keep you fully informed on the latest developments.
Happy Holidays.
The SCIN Team

Bottle Top Mosaics This company can do glass mosaics, mother of pearl, wood and stainless steel so why not use a bottle top. What an ingenious idea, the right size, fantastic individual graphics and a whimsical way of prolonging the life of this highly tactile, party animal. |
Acoustic Translucent Panel Descriptive Material words that tick your boxes - acoustic, transluscent...two words that rarely go together. So guess what this is? This material is one of a range of translucent sandwich panels with a first degree in acoustic performance. The core may be of different diameter sizes too. Need I say more.

Hand Crafted Wool Felt Wool Felt is essentially heated and compressed wool fibres when industrially made but Claudy, the designer behind this is a handcrafted, hand dyed, flock of sheep owning kind of girl. But this is no ‘Mary had a little lamb ‘ and her designs range from ethereal materials with the lightness of whipped cream to striking black ‘shaggy’ felt walls to free standing felt installations. |
Super White Coating A ‘dayglow’ white beetle has proven that superwhite is possible simply by the arrangement of its cuticles for greater light refraction. Fast forward and these new coatings are just around the corner by re-arranging the minerals used within the structure. The results are thinner less mineral intensive coatings. Knocking spots of its earlier thicker layered predecessors. |

Crazy Grass Synthetic grass in crazy colours for a wild take on the lawn. The polyethylene fibres are stitched onto soft perforated backing. This grass is suitable for internal and external use and is even UV and Salt Water resistant. |
Bio Luminum Created from aircraft fuselage found at decimated military sites these aluminium tiles are 100% recycled and 100% recyclable. They are suitable for both wall and floor. |
Lasered Filigree Wood The wood veneers have been lasercut and layered with a deftness that creates an enchanting wood material reminiscent of filigree. The veneers may be curved and the results range from birdlike 3Dimensional pieces to stunning panels and furniture applications. Emma, the designer can stitch and embroider it too. |
PVC Foil These simple vinyl’s are brilliant cost effective alternatives to lacquering, 3 times more impact resistant than High Pressure Laminates and may be profile wrapped avoiding edge trims. Not only that but they are available in a range of finishes from high gloss and super matt colours to wood grains for use from office desktops to cabinetry. |
